Breast prosthetics, also known as breast forms, are designed to restore the appearance of the breast and help balance the body’s shape after surgery.
Types of Breast Prosthetics:
There are different types of breast prosthetics available, designed to meet the needs of women based on their surgery, preferences, and lifestyle:
1. External Breast Prosthesis (Breast Form)
An external breast prosthesis is a breast-shaped form that fits into a bra or adheres to the skin. It mimics the shape and weight of the natural breast. These are the most common type of prosthetics for women who do not wish to undergo breast reconstruction or who are waiting for reconstruction surgery.
- Silicone Breast Forms: The most popular type of prosthesis, made from soft silicone to resemble the weight, feel, and movement of a natural breast. They come in various sizes and shapes to match the remaining breast or the desired size.
- Foam or Fiberfill Breast Forms: Lightweight and comfortable, these are often used during the initial post-surgery phase or for women who prefer a lighter option for physical activities.
- Adhesive Breast Forms: Some prosthetics can stick directly to the chest wall, allowing the user to wear any type of bra or even go bra-free in some cases. They offer more flexibility in clothing choices.
2. Post-Surgical Soft Forms
Immediately after surgery, while the chest area is healing and sensitive, women often use soft, temporary prosthetic forms. These are lightweight and made from materials like foam or cotton, providing comfort without irritating the surgical site. They can be worn inside specially designed post-surgical bras.
3. Custom-Made Prosthesis
Custom prostheses are tailored to a woman’s individual body shape and skin tone. Advanced imaging technology is used to create a prosthetic that fits seamlessly onto the chest wall. These are more expensive than standard breast forms but offer a highly personalized fit and appearance.
4. Partial Breast Prosthesis (Shapers)
For women who have had a lumpectomy or breast-conserving surgery, a partial prosthesis (also called a shaper or shell) can fill in the gap left by the surgery. These forms come in different sizes and thicknesses and can be placed inside a bra to create symmetry between the breasts.

- Flexibility: Women can wear their prosthesis with different types of bras, swimsuits, and clothing, and they can remove it when they wish. Prosthetics provide flexibility in both physical appearance and lifestyle.
Choosing a Prosthesis:
The choice of prosthesis depends on several factors:
- Type of Surgery: Whether a woman has had a mastectomy, lumpectomy, or double mastectomy influences the type of prosthetic needed.
- Lifestyle and Activity Level: Active women may prefer lighter forms, such as foam or adhesive prosthetics, for comfort and ease of movement.
- Personal Preferences: Some women prefer a more natural look and feel, while others may prioritize comfort or cost.
Post-Mastectomy Bras:
Breast prosthetics are often worn with post-mastectomy bras, which are specially designed to hold the prosthesis in place. These bras usually feature:
- Pockets: Internal pockets to securely hold the prosthesis.
- Soft Materials: Made from gentle, soft fabrics to avoid irritation to the surgical area.
- Adjustable Straps: Straps designed to support the weight of the prosthesis and prevent discomfort or back strain.
- Variety of Styles: Available in different designs (e.g., sports bras, lacy styles, or everyday bras) to suit different needs and preferences.
Prosthetics for Swimming:
Swim prosthetics are specially designed for water activities. They are made from lightweight, quick-drying materials that maintain their shape in water. Paired with mastectomy swimwear that has built-in pockets, swim prosthetics allow women to enjoy water-based activities confidently.
Caring for a Breast Prosthesis:
Breast prosthetics, especially silicone ones, require proper care to ensure their longevity:
- Cleaning: Most prosthetics should be cleaned daily with mild soap and water to remove oils and maintain hygiene.
- Storage: Prostheses should be stored in their original box or a protective case when not in use to avoid damage.
- Replacement: Silicone prosthetics typically last 1 to 2 years but may need to be replaced if they become worn or damaged.
