Skin Sparing Mastectomy
A skin-sparing mastectomy (SSM) is a type of mastectomy surgery performed to treat breast cancer or as a preventive measure in high-risk individuals. The procedure involves the removal of the entire breast tissue while we try to preserve most of the skin over the breast while the nipple and aerola are removed along with the skin. This approach allows for better cosmetic outcomes as the natural skin of the breast is retained.
Skin sparing mastectomy is used when the entire breast tissue needs to be removed either because of a large tumor, or multiple tumors in the same breast preventing breast conservation. This method is chosen when the tumor is also involving the Nipple and hence it cannot be saved.
SSM, skin sparing mastectomy is an option to be chosen only when patient wishes to have an immediate breast reconstruction, either using implants or body tissues to create the breast volume and shape.
We at Hyderabad Breast Clinics would like to re assure you that the success and cure of breast cancer would be the same wether you opt for Regular mastectomy or Skin sparing Mastectomy.
Key Points:
- Preservation of Skin: The breast tissue is removed, but most of the skin envelope of the breast is preserved. This provides a better foundation for reconstruction and a more natural look post-reconstruction.
- Reconstruction: Skin-sparing mastectomy is often combined with immediate breast reconstruction, either with implants or using the patient’s own tissue (flap reconstruction). This reduces the number of surgeries and improves cosmetic outcomes.
- Suitability: The decision to undergo an SSM depends on factors like the size and location of the tumor, cancer stage, and whether the patient is a candidate for immediate reconstruction. It is more commonly performed for smaller tumors or for prophylactic mastectomies in individuals with a high risk of developing breast cancer.
- Oncological Safety: Research suggests that skin-sparing mastectomies have similar survival rates and cancer control outcomes as traditional mastectomies when appropriate candidates are selected.
- Scarring and Recovery: By preserving the skin, SSM typically results in less visible scarring compared to traditional mastectomy, and it may shorten recovery time due to the less invasive nature of the procedure
